Blue Eye Shadow

This is my second collage work, similar in scale to “Flower Salad”. This is part of the UHCW Coventry Hospital’s Summer Exhibition for Healing Arts 2019, which is currently on show (for free!) until 30th September.

I have been trawling through some of my old sketchbooks, and I’ve realised just how many fashion sketches I have done over the years. So, I thought, since summer time is the season for festival-going, I could sketch another girl with another frock. I came up with this dreamy concoction… She has decided to channel her inner Bowie, put on some blue eye shadow, wear a scintillating frock and have a fabulous time!

I managed to make this in a day, so for this scale of work, that is a rarity for me! Throwing caution to the wind, I simply made ‘her’ with what I had on hand. I had some of these lapiz lazuli-blue paper, which I cut into 15 cm squares and origami-folded them into triangles – perfect shapes for dramatic ‘eyes’. The hand-cut hair seems to suggest a subtle dimension. The yellow flower eyes hopefully will evoke some twinkle for that all-important selfie!
