I am showing today another archive piece. This cutout and quilling work was commissioned as a wedding present for a couple who both loved to read. Their favourite books were the Discworld novels (groom’s) and the The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe (bride’s). So I played with this theme and created a wardrobe showing some familiar characters waiting as you enter the wardrobe. I seem to remember aching fingers after this work was finally finished as the scalpel had caused an almost permanent dimple on my index finger after finishing all those teeny-weeny cutout shapes. Pressure was needed at each cutting stroke as I used a 300 gsm paper to give the cutouts more depth. The door of the wardrobe has this elaborate, baroque quilling, as if to announce its surprise inside. I am happy to report that the bride and groom were very pleased by this piece.

I am a self-taught designer-maker based in the U.K. I am interested in the inherent beauty of textiles and paper. I describe myself as a peripatetic maker of things, given my number of skills in crafts. Having used paper and textiles longest, these tend to feature on my works quite heavily.
